An employer's need to play an active role in their staff/patients' safety is at an all-time high to reduce their risk of violence. The Health and Safety Executive provides a definition of workplace violence: 'any incident in which a person is abused, threatened or assaulted in circumstances relating to their work'. The source of that threat/risk may come from third parties, but it could also be from colleagues or service users. Therefore, ensuring that all parties are kept as safe as possible is crucial, whether that is defusing conflict, breaking away from an attack or supporting with a person's overwhelm.

Breakaway training in the health care sector is one of our specialities. Also see CRISIS (PMVA).
In workplaces where service users (or third parties connected to them) may be confused or overwhelmed, there may be a degree of behaviour that challenges care/service provision. Invictus Pro Training have been working with both Hospital Security firms and NHS Teams across the South Coast for years. With over 35 years' experience of working with the public, we've just about seen it all. Our trainers have dealt with difficult situations including frustrated, angry and even violent customers and understand intrinsically how to manage and diffuse each circumstance. In customer facing industries, how your staff deal with dissatisfied customers has a direct impact on your bottom line. Understanding the motivations behind customer complaints allows your staff to remain in control and diffuse each situation. That level of training increases chances of repeat business and staff retention, lowering your training and hiring costs. We tailor our approach to suit individual business sectors. This ensures alignment with specific legislation and best practice relative to 'your' field.

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employers to assess the risk of stress-related ill health arising from work activities, as with any other hazard. The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 requires an employer to take measures to control that risk.
Once you have assessed the risk of violence in your workplace, and where you cannot remove it, you must put the right controls in place to protect your workers.
Training can be used to prevent and manage violence. Training should be available to everyone working for you who may be at risk.
Whether your team deal with the public face to face, over the phone or online we can guide your team how to manage expectations and how to respond when something doesn't go to plan.
In an increasingly stressful world, we have to be more aware of conflict. It is an employer's legal responsibility to protect staff from workplace violence and manage stressful situations. You can empower your staff with specialist training in dealing with difficult behaviour. Give them the skills to be proactive and understand how to diffuse and de-escalate with authority. We offer a bespoke consultation service to discuss the challenges you and your staff face.

The SIA's guidance is that security operatives should refresh their physical intervention skills on a regular basis, with a minimum of annual training. Most within this sector would agree that the standard SIA physical intervention within the Door Supervisor course is inadequate to deal with anything other than primarily compliant patrons. A risk assessment of the violence that they or their co-workers are likely to face should be carried out, we can train that skills gap. Those that aren't trained in how to deal with complicated or higher-stress situations will by default revert to type, potentially leaving your company and operative in a legally vulnerable position.
Minimum annual refresh recommended by the SIA.
